Derek Drewry - Kaiwhakairo (carver)

 

Ngai Te Rangi 

Derek Drewry was born in Napier and raised in Tauranga Moana.

Derek specializes in customary Maori woodcarving, often using native timbers such as Totara, Matai, and Kauri. 

Derek started carving under the mentorship of Thomas Hansen working with New Zealand's NZ Designer Artworx Ltd on projects such as restoration carvings for the Rotorua Airport Waharoa and creating unique taonga pieces for regional exhibitions.

Derek completed two years studying at Te Wananga o Aotearoa, gaining a diploma in Maori Indiginous Arts and is currently studying and learning Te Reo Maori.
