The moko (tattoo) explained:
The four lines on the forehead equal Ahupuri.
The nine thorns on the nose equal Patea-Ngati Ruanui iwi (his fathers tribe).
The pattern behind the cheek represents Taranaki iwi, and Tuwharetoa of Taupo iwi and Kahungunu of Hawkes Bay iwi.
He is a warrior.
He has government of a region and has risen to the rank from a warrior.
He has married into the third line - this confirms his own rise.
His rank is granted by the tiapuru.
His mothers iwi is Kahungunu.
Kohere, protector of his land and his people.
